Special Education Program and Services

  • Students between the ages of 3 - 21 who are approved by the District Committee on Special Education (CSE) can receive special education services and participate in programs appropriate for their needs. This includes all resident students who attend private schools or who are home-schooled. These programs and services are determined by the Committee on Special Education, and are then outlined in the child's Individual Education Program (IEP). These include special class, inclusion programs, resource rooms, consulting services, as well as related services of speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and counseling services.  Program modifications and testing accommodations are also available to your child.

Mexico Academy and Central School employs appropriately trained and certified special education staff members to insure that all special education services as indicated on the student's IEP are provided.  However, there are times when it makes more sense to contract outside of the district, usually BOCES or Pemberton Associates, for services. For example, when:

    • the needed service is of a highly specialized or unique nature and the employment of district staff  to provide this service is not feasible
    • the needed service requires specialized facilities or equipment that are not available within the district

BOCES and Pemberton Associates provides for students who require unique services, such as Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.  Through the use of district and BOCES and Pemberton programs, we are able to provide a range of services for our students with special education needs.
