Mr. Parkhurst selected to guide next chapter at Mexico Middle School

A focus on connection, culture, and student belonging will guide the next chapter at Mexico Middle School.
MACS Superintendent Dr. Donna Runner announced that Shawn Parkhurst has been appointed principal, effective July 1, citing his experience and commitment to fostering strong school communities. Parkhurst was officially approved by the Board of Education at their March 19 meeting.
“We are confident that he will build upon the strong foundation already in place at our middle school while continuing to foster a positive, inclusive, and student-centered school environment,” said Dr. Runner. “We are excited about the experience, energy, and leadership he will bring to Mexico Middle School.”
For Parkhurst, the transition marks another step in a career rooted in both education and community. Born and raised in Scriba and a graduate of Mexico schools, he returned to the district in 2014 after beginning his career in physical education and coaching in the Buffalo area.
Since then, he has served as a physical education teacher across multiple buildings, department coordinator, coach at the modified, varsity, and collegiate levels, and most recently assistant principal at the high school. He has also served as principal of the CiTi BOCES Regional Summer School program.
Parkhurst emphasized that the middle school years are a pivotal time for students, and that the environment adults create plays a critical role in shaping their experience and growth.
“Middle school is one of the most important and transformative stages in a student’s life. When students walk through our doors, they should feel a sense of belonging, encouragement, and belief in their potential — and that culture begins with us.”
He also shared a clear vision for how that culture is built, highlighting the importance of collaboration, support, and shared purpose among staff.
“Culture is not something that happens to us — it is something we intentionally build together. When we support one another, celebrate success, and stay focused on what’s best for students, we create a school community where everyone can succeed.”
A proud Mexico alumnus with deep roots in the district, Parkhurst’s leadership reflects both his experience and his personal connection to the community — a foundation he hopes will continue to strengthen relationships and support students, staff, and families alike as he takes on his new role.
Brian Pulvino, the longtime Fulton superintendent who took over the MMS principal role in late December on an interim basis, will continue to lead the school for the remainder of 2025-26 until Parkhurst officially takes over July 1, district officials noted.
