Tigers basketball players reach 1,000 career points within days of each other
In the decades of the historic Mexico Tigers basketball programs, there had been only four student-athletes to eclipse 1,000 points during their time with the program. That list grew by 50% in the last few games of the season as varsity boys basketball players Chris Hermitt and Brayden Mack both reached the career milestone.
Hermitt hit the 1,000 point mark during a game against Pulaski, and then three games later against Christian Brothers Academy it was Mack’s turn to reach the mark. Both milestones occurred on their home court.
On both occasions, the game stopped and a quick ceremony and photos marked their achievement before play resumed.
“Both Chris and Brayden are the ultimate competitors, and reaching 1,000 points is a testament to their determination, consistency and basketball IQ,” said Mexico boys varsity basketball coach Jon Gagnon. “They lead by example and have helped reshape the culture of Mexico basketball with their commitment and hard work. One thousand points doesn’t happen by accident, and both players have the ability to make a play when their team needs it most.”
Other members of Mexico’s 1,000 points club include Kyle Reuter (2000-05, program record 1,676 points), Kristina Lavery (2002-06, girls program record 1,114 points), Kendra Harter (2011-16) and Anyssia Ingersoll (2019-23).
Gagnon said he has had the opportunity to coach Mack for all four years of his high school career in both basketball and football, while Hermitt joined the program during his sophomore year after arriving in the district. Over that time, the two developed not only as standout athletes but also as leaders within the program.
“I’m incredibly proud of both of them,” Gagnon said. “They’ve built a great relationship on and off the court, and they’re like family to me. Seeing the look on their faces when they reached that milestone was priceless — a moment I’ll remember forever.”
Looking ahead, Mack has committed to play baseball in college next year, while Hermitt is currently weighing his options but plans to continue his basketball career at the next level.
