Be aware: Tick season is upon us
Dear Families,
We are reaching out to raise awareness about the growing prevalence of tick-borne illnesses in our area. Some members of our staff have been affected by these diseases, highlighting the significant impact they can have on health and daily life.
Recent reports indicate a rapid increase in cases of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis in Central New York. All of these illnesses are transmitted by black-legged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks. While Lyme disease is the most widely recognized, other tick-borne diseases are on the rise and can cause severe symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and even life-threatening complications if not promptly treated.
It’s also important to note that ticks pose a risk not only to humans but to pets as well. Dogs and cats can bring ticks into the home, increasing exposure for the entire family. We encourage you to check both yourselves and your pets regularly after spending time outdoors and to use tick prevention methods recommended by healthcare professionals and veterinarians.
As May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, we encourage families to take this opportunity to learn more about tick-borne illnesses and how to protect against them. Attached, you will find a pamphlet from the CDC with detailed information on recognizing symptoms, preventing tick bites, and what to do if you suspect exposure.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. By staying informed and proactive, we can help protect the health and well-being of our community.
