Letter from Dr. Runner on Guidelines for Heat Conditions in classrooms

Dear MACS Family,
With the weather finally turning sunny and warm, I wanted to take a moment to share information about new regulations enacted by New York state regarding extreme heat conditions in schools.
The new law establishes guidelines for how schools must respond when classroom temperatures reach 82°F or higher, and it calls for student relocation, when practical, if temperatures reach 88°F.
Actions at 82°F
In spaces without air conditioning, when the temperature reaches 82°F, our schools will take steps to reduce heat-related discomfort, including but not limited to:
- Turning off overhead lights
- Opening windows to improve air circulation
- Lowering shades or blinds
- Using fans
- Turning off unused heat-producing electronics
- Providing additional water breaks
Actions at 88°F
- If a classroom reaches 88°F, we will relocate students and staff to a cooler location whenever practical. This may include moving to an air-conditioned space or another cooler area within the building.
- If relocation occurs within the building, it will be communicated to all staff, including safety and security personnel. If relocation to another building is necessary, families will be notified.
- Early dismissal or building closure due to extreme heat will be a last resort and used only when absolutely necessary. In such cases, we will follow established emergency notification procedures to inform staff and families.
- While the law allows for remote instruction during extreme heat events, the District does not plan to use remote learning unless no other option is feasible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or your Principal.
Dr. Runner, Superintendent
