Youth Art Month roundup: MHS celebrates its student artists
March is Youth Art Month, and Mexico High School students have been taking advantage of a number of unique and enriching activities in the past month.
Two students had artwork on display at the NYSATA Legislative Exhibit, which is the flagship event for Youth Art Month and the state art teacher association's largest public display of student artwork in a government building. The event is co-sponsored by NYSUT and has been an ongoing initiative since 1990.
MHS students selected for the honor on display included sophomore Finnegan Taylor for his ceramic, “Rat Mug,” and freshman Racheal Tripp for her charcoal self-portrait. See both works at the bottom of this article.
The MACS National Art Honor Society Inductions are upcoming Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the high school, where a number of students will officially join the group after earning their place. There will be a senior art display in the gallery attached to Mrs. Malone’s room to appreciate the works of Class of 2024 students.
Two students will be on hand for the Community Connection event on Saturday, March 23, to represent the art program, painting students’ faces.
Last month, high school ceramics students visited the Onondaga Community College Whitney Applied Technology center to tour the CNY Scholastics Art Show. The works on display included five MHS students.
The students earning recognition included Madalyn Dann for her ceramic titled “My Father’s Daughter;” Amanda Guerra for her ceramic “Redesign;” Marc Loomis for his ceramic “Rumination;” Sarah Marsden for her drawing “Urban Ivy;” and Harley Potter for her ceramic “Anxiety.” Each of the five students earned Honorable Mention for their works.
