On y va: French Club spends February break in France
Members of the Mexico High School French Club traveled abroad during February break, spending nine days overseas in France.
They journeyed first to the city of Tours in the Loire Valley, an area famous for its beautiful chateaux. Students were excited to see the town they’d learned about in class, and to see the incredible architecture of three Renaissance chateaux.
They explored the “ladies' castle” at the Chateau de Chenonceau, which was owned and renovated by multiple French queens, and used as an important strategic point by the French Resistance during World War II. Participants then toured the famed Chateau de Chambord, home to a world-famous double helix staircase and commissioned by King Francois I in 1519 as a symbol of his power. Finally, they discovered the ruins of the Chateau d’Amboise, where Leonardo da Vinci passed the last years of his life. Students also experienced a wealth of authentic French meals, a grocery store, shopping, and a hands-on workshop to expand their senses!
After Tours, the students traveled to Paris, where they learned to use the metro system while visiting such iconic monuments as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Sainte-Chapelle, Sacre-Coeur, and the Opera Garnier. They indulged in artisanal Berthillon ice cream on the Ile Saint-Louis, dined on delicious crepes mere steps from the Louvre, and experimented with foie gras near Notre Dame Cathedral. The group even spent a day at Versailles, exploring the open market in town, the immense palace, the formal gardens, and the mock peasant village of the late Marie-Antoinette.
The French Club had an opportunity for cross-curricular learning at the impressionist art museum, Musee d’Orsay, and at the national army museum at the Hotel National des Invalides, where they viewed the resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte. They also engaged in yet another immersive exhibit featuring the art of Marc Chagall accompanied by music contemporary to the artist’s life.
French Club members are excited to continue the tradition by planning future travel opportunities.
