MACS honors Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child.

Military members and military-connected families make many sacrifices for the security and safety of our nation, specifically military-connected children during their K-12 careers. April is designated as the Month of the Military Child or Purple Up! For Military Kids. Across the nation, states and school districts will celebrate the important role military children play while their service member parents serve our country through special events and wearing the color purple.

The Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission (MIC3) selected Wednesday, April 21, 2021 as the official Purple Up! For Military Kids day! Please join the MIC3 and the New York State Education Department in celebrating military children throughout the month of April.

Below are some thoughts from Mexico Academy and Central School District Superintendent Dr. Donna Runner:

“As I thought about our military heroes and all they sacrifice to protect the United States of America, I am grateful for their service.

I also thought about their families and the stress placed upon them. Over the years, I have worked with many students from military families and seen the transient nature of their schooling because of the assignments in different locales given to those who serve our country.

While the changes may have been difficult, I have seen many of those students show great resilience and fortitude, using those skills to find success. I once played Pictionary with a military family and was totally floored when I created a poorly-drawn helicopter and even the five-year-old was yelling Blackhawk, Chinook, Osprey, etc.

Background knowledge means a great deal and these students will need an opportunity to connect in particular ways with other students. For example, do they have opportunity to talk with others who understand words like “deployment” and “spouse house” among other unique vocabulary?

As we seek to support the learning for all our scholars during this Month of the Military Child, let us remember that these children may have some needs related to the military.”

The New York State Education Department wishes to highlight local Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Day celebrations.
