Sixth-graders enter 'go green' poster in 811 contest
Five students at Mexico Middle School have dedicated a portion of the last two months designing and developing a poster for a contest run by local organization Dig Safely New York.
Sixth-grade students Kierstyn Ford, Aubrey Shaffer, Seanna Twiss, Angelina Nguyen-Truong and Avery Willis have been hard at work and now their entry is online for public voting.
Dig Safely New York, which helps people who dial 811 statewide identify whether an area is safe for excavating or digging, called upon students to create and share their vision of what the world will look like in 50 years.
The Mexico group discussed different topics in their vision of the future, and decided on a “going green” theme. Further discussion revealed that the most single-use plastic and Styrofoam waste comes from grocery stores.
The team decided to depict a grocery store in 2019 and then also what it might look like in 2069 with ecofriendly alternatives and zero-waste packaging.
Posters are online for voting until Dec. 12 at https://www.digsafelynewyork.com/school-poster-contest-public-voting.
In a video that accompanied their poster entry, sixth-grade students (in alphabetical order) Kierstyn Ford, Aubrey Shaffer, Seanna Twiss and Avery Willis share their vision for the poster they created. Not pictured is Angelina Nguyen-Truong, who also worked on the project. The video can be viewed at: https://www.digsafelynewyork.com/school-poster-contest-public-voting
