Welcome! My name is Miss LaVerne. I have been teaching at Mexico Academy High School since 2012. I received a Bachelor of Science in English/Creative Writing from SUNY Brockport, and then went on to receive my MST in Dual Secondary English Education and Students with Disabilities from Lemoyne College. I have been lucky enough to teach a wide variety of things in my four years at the high school. These areas include English 10 & 11 and English AIS, as well as two college preparatory courses; AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and Foundations of College and Life Success (CAY101). The CAY101 course also comes with the exciting opportunity to graduate high school with 3 college credits free of charge! I am also very excited to be one of the advisors for the S.A.D.D. Club.
My hobbies include running, reading, and writing. Typical of an English teacher, right? I have two young daughters that keep me busy and my heart full, and a giant wolf dog that completes our home.
I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach your children! Thank you for allowing me to share my experiences and knowledge with them. Connecting their lives to what we read and discuss in the classroom is of utmost importance to me. Your children will be involved in direct instruction, pairing, small group work, and full classroom discussion on a weekly basis. Variety, inquiry, and participation foster an exciting, safe, and creative classroom environment. I hope to learn as much from them as they learn from me! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns throughout the school year. Our communication will always be open, honest, and with your child's best interest in mind. I look forward to another rewarding year here at Mexico Academy High School!
